Manage Your Accounts With Quicken Online

Yesterday we discussed using Wesabe to keep track of your money. A regular reader and commenter, Jerry Hung, pointed out the Quicken Online is also available in Canada. I had looked at Quicken online previously for my own finances but it had a monthly fee and did not appear to support Canadians. Last year, Quicken dropped the monthly fee to compete with other free services. As far as supporting Canada, when registering you must give a valid zip code, but after that you can add Canadian bank accounts.

Adding bank accounts to Quicken Online is simple, you search for the name of your bank and then use your regular web login for that bank. Quicken will pull in all your accounts and categorize most of the expenses, though some of the category guesses were incorrect and I’ll have to go through and change them.

Like Wesabe, Quicken Online also has a mobile version for smartphones. Unfortunately, neither web site supports my most used credit card. I sent in a request to both sites to get it added, it will be interesting to see who responds sooner for this type of request.

I’m leaning towards Quicken Online for my own finance tracking. I would like to see complete investment tracking, or at least integration with their desktop software. Give Quicken Online a try if you simply want to track your expenses within a user friendly interface.

Woo hoo, nice to get another fan!

FYI: Quicken Online can tap into my TD Waterhouse and VISA (whatever’s in EasyWeb), so it kind of does investment

But no, I wouldn’t expect it to be a portfolio management platform, rather a simple version of Microsoft Money. You can categorize, set budgets, get alerts/reminders, good enough features for a start.

I like how Quicken Online tried to classify the liquor store (LCBO) as a Utility. I hardly even drink, but it took my one big summer purchase there and set it up as a monthly utility bill.

I confess, I’d probably drink more if it came out of the taps for $40/month

    @Kevin,

Haha, the scary thing is that, for Quicken to know, an earlier user probably classified it that way in the first place! Maybe to hide it from their spouse?

How are you tapping into banking accounts when Quicken Online doesn’t work with Canadian postal codes?

    Alex,

Use a zip code instead… maybe 90210 since we know that is valid. After that, you’re in and the Canadian banks are all there for you to add.

I’m not sure why Quicken, a Canadian company, doesn’t officially support Canada. But this zip code trick will allow you to use it anyway!

No Canadian banks supported. It does not recognize CIBC.

Yeah, I see TD Bank, but not TD Canada Trust. Is Wesabe the only one that will support Canadian banks?

Chris, I’m still waiting for my Club Sobeys MasterCard to get added as well. You can put in a request to get your type of account added, not sure how quick they are though.

I have to admit that I am a little disappointed. Like you, I have given a valid ZIP code but there are MANY canadian banks not present. National Bank of Canada is not there, as well as the Caisse Populaire Desjardins… So I do not think you can say that it supports Canadian banks. The true statement would be that it supports Canadian banks which have branched out into the US.

    Disappointed!

my 2 banks: Servus Credit Union (one of the largest cu chains in canada) and PC Financial are not listed. This from an Edmonton Based company? what a joke!

correction – a second search for president’s choice did show up – but did not on first search (buggy?). I can live with that since my pc accound is my primary household account.

      rick couture,
Glad you got President’s Choice working (great bank, we use their chequing account). Not having Servus in is a big lost for a lot of Canadians. My request to get the Sobeys MasterCard still hasn’t gone through either. Hopefully with Quicken buying Mint, we’ll start to get a proper Canadian setup since Mint was looking at this before their acquisition.

Well, I decided to give quicken online a real tryout, and spent a night of pure frustration trying to wrangle my last 3 months of transactions into something meaningful.

The biggest problem is with my line of credit. It is a separate account. I know over the past 3 months that our balance on the line of credit increased by X amount. Quicken online however showed that i made some $900 INCOME FROM my line of credit….truly bizarre I know! No matter what transfers i deleted or tried to change categorization of transfers in and out of this account, i could not find a way to make this work…so either i cannot use quicken online, or remove the borrowing account completely and manually tag the transfers into chequing as “income” “borrowed from line of credit” and the loan payments as “expenses” “loan payment”.

also, due to PC Financial’s credit card security measures, quicken cannot download my credit card transactions, even though it is on their list.

having to manually jig up my credit card and loan accounts mean i’m sitting on the fence here….the wife wants to use money in jars like on that reality tv home budgeting show…ugh!

Quicken online (Mint.com) does not support CIBC or BMO or Coast Capital Credit Union. I submitted a request and was told they only support US Banks. Wesabe does have Canadian Banks like CIBC, but there is no ability to auto sync the accounts. You must first download the info then up load – this is a pain. So I deleted both accounts. Nice idea but totally useless in Canada as far as I’m concerned. Who ever solves the problems first will get my business.
